Measurements from Google Play search, dated and with their method: what we saw, on which keywords, and what it does not prove.
- Where the first app writes the search term, and how often it does not write it at all
Across 1,346 keywords that Google Play itself suggests, the app in first place has the whole term in its title on 22% and somewhere in its listing on 56%. For phrases of three words or more it usually has only part of the phrase.
- Four mistakes our own scores made, and the measurement that caught each
Popularity and difficulty are estimates. In September we checked their distributions against what they should look like and found four errors. Here they are, with the numbers.
- Ratings count and rank: the heaviest app is first less often than you think
Across 2,299 keywords, the app in first place has a higher median ratings count than the rest of the top ten. But the single most-rated app is first on only one keyword in five.
- The term in the title: what the top ten show
How often does the app in first place have the search term in its title? For one-word terms almost half the time; for three-word phrases, one time in ten.
