Where to spend your effort: page two and dead weight
Moving from 14 to 9 is usually worth more than chasing 40 to 1. And some keywords in your pool only cost you attention.
The first page is what gets seen
Most people who search pick from the first screen of results. A keyword at position 40 brings almost nothing, and so does one at 15; a keyword at 8 brings real installs. That makes the band just outside the top ten — positions 11 to 20 — the most valuable place to work: the listing already ranks there, so Play already connects it to the term, and a small gain crosses the line that matters.
Why page two beats the long climb
Going from 40 to 1 needs weight you probably do not have yet: ratings, installs, time. Going from 14 to 9 often needs one change — the term moved from the long description into the short one, or the right word form in the title. In one pool we measured, 213 tracked keywords sat in that band. That list, sorted by popularity, is a better to-do list than any score.
Dead weight
At the other end is a keyword that has been measured, has never ranked anywhere in the first fifty, and has low popularity. It is not a target; it is clutter. Across the tracked keywords we measured, 18% were in this state.
All three conditions matter. A keyword that has not been measured yet has not been judged. A keyword that does not rank but is popular is still a goal — it just needs a different plan. Only the combination says: this term is not worth chasing now.
Prune, but keep one eye open
Removing dead weight makes the rest of the pool readable. If you keep some for later, check them now and then rather than daily — a term that suddenly gets searched will show up again in autocomplete and in your competitors' ranks.
