Daily rank changes: which moves mean something
Most day-to-day movement on Google Play is noise. Reacting to it wastes edits; the moves that matter are thresholds, not deltas.
Ranks wobble every day
Measure the same term at the same hour on consecutive days and positions shuffle by one or two places with nothing changed on either side. Play refreshes its signals continuously and breaks near-ties differently from one day to the next.
The scale is larger than people expect. Over three days in one market, 690 rank changes were recorded for tracked keywords; 504 were a single place and 100 were two. Eighty-seven percent of the movement was wobble.
Deltas and states
Two kinds of change deserve different treatment. A delta is "down four places"; it matters only when it is bigger than the wobble, so a threshold of three places or more filters out most of the noise.
A state change is crossing a line: entering or leaving the top ten, dropping out of the first fifty. Going from 10 to 11 is a single place, but it is the difference between the first page and the second, and it is worth knowing even though a delta filter would drop it.
Read the trend, not the day
One bad day is not a trend. Before acting on a drop, look at the keyword's last two weeks: a single dip that recovers is wobble; a staircase down over several days is a real change, usually because a competitor updated their listing or gained installs. Check the competitors on that term before you touch your own text.
Do not edit in response to noise
Every listing change resets the question of what worked. If you change the title because of a one-place drop, you cannot tell afterwards whether the next move came from the edit or from the wobble. Change one thing at a time, then give it at least one or two weeks of daily measurement.
